Malaysia Day 6 – Genting Highlands

Hi everyone,

We started off the day with the hotel buffet breakfast again. Julian really likes this breakfast because of its selection of fruits and donuts. It’s the first buffet breakfast he’s been enthusiastic about so that’s a win.

New friend

Today we were going to Genting Highlands which is an area in the mountains about an hour away from KL by car that has resorts, theme parks and a casino. We originally planned on doing the cable car but since they were maintaining the newer one and only had the old one open we decided to skip it and Grab all the way to our hotel. Even with the change of plans we packed up the things we would need for two nights and stored our big luggage at the hotel in KL since we were returning.

That’s not how you use a slide

The drive was windy and there were cars racing each other up the mountain. Our Grab driver was saying that not many Westerners go to Genting and that certainly is true.

Our hotel at Genting Highlands is the one attached to the theme park here and is very cheap, and the room shows it. It was nice to be able to check in via self service on a screen and pay about 10 ringgit to check in about 3 hours early which equates to under $4. The room has no air con which is a bummer but since we don’t plan to spend much time in the room we can live with it. Genting Highlands is also quite a bit cooler than KL being up in the mountains. We have a perfectly adequate bathroom and all the space we need so it’s fine.

An okay room

At least we are not staying across the way at the World’s Largest Hotel. While it’s cool to have that title it looks a bit like a prison from the outside and I reckon the rooms would be nasty. I don’t think a hotel with over 7000 rooms could be properly looked after.

The worlds largest hotel just across the street

It was around lunch time when we’d settled in so we went to wander around to find lunch. There is a whole lot of restaurants but we picked Madam Kwan’s which is a Malaysian restaurant chain selling a lot of the popular dishes from here and also Western food which satisfied Julian. We ordered Teh Tarik for drinks, Nasi Lemak with beef rendang and a curry laksa. Julian had his favourite combo of spaghetti and chippies. For dessert we had Chendol which has shaved ice, pandan jelly, red bean and a brown sugar syrup. Other than the red bean it’s actually quite nice despite looking a bit yuck.

Teh Tariks are damn good
It looks like literal shit, but it’s actually good

We needed to let our bellies settle after lunch so we thought let’s get Julian to play at the indoor Jungle Gym. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite the rest our tummies needed before our next activity because we were climbing up to the big slides, jumping on the trampolines and wading through the massive ball pit. Regardless it was fun for a bit.

Loves a playground, this one was awesome and empty

Finally we got to our main activity for today which was a big indoor theme park called Skytropolis. It’s pretty much a fair that’s open every day. We got unlimited ride passes and for some reason started with the most intense ride where you lay flat on a glider and get taken along the track at super high speeds. It goes upside down a few times and it kind of felt like you were going to fall out when that happened. Fun though!

This ride was intense

It wasn’t busy at all so we had no wait for rides and at one point Aimee was on this huge spinning ride alone. All of the rides were quality. Julian’s favourite ride was the train ride. He liked it so much we went again.

Fun on the little train ride

We wandered around for a bit after we finished with the rides and Ronnie did a Zombie outbreak experience which pretty much lasted two minutes because he was hastily getting away from the zombies following him. He said it was terrifying.

There was a robot walking around
Robot dogs too

We were hungry for dinner after all the fun so we went to Five Guys for cheeseburgers and fries. It’s the 4th country we’ve had it in. The food always hits. You feel yucky after but it was just what we needed as we felt so exhausted for the day. We picked up a Strawberry Mochi Cream Cake and some cream puffs for dessert to take back to the hotel and eat later, which we did and they were delish.

The fourth country we’ve had Five Guys in, always alright
Nice cake and choux

We were pretty much ready for bed by the end of all this so we showered in the surprisingly good shower then retired for the night with another big day ahead the next day.

It’s also a massive shopping centre
