Hi everyone,
Another early 5:30am start for seemingly no reason. The older we get, the worse even small amounts of jet lag hit. Oh well.
We decided to skip hotel breakfast this morning and head down to Great World for a uniquely Singaporean breakfast – Kaya toast at the famous Ya Kun Kaya Toast. Kaya is a coconut jam spread onto toast with big chunks of butter that you then dip into a soft boiled egg with soy sauce and white pepper. It’s sounds weird and it looks good but fuck me is it delicious.

After that wonderful treat we caught the bus a few streets away to check out a local residential neighbourhood called Tiong Bahru. Firstly, we took Julian to the playground here which was very very cool and he loved it.

We were absolutely sweating bullets here, incredibly humid this morning. Then we wandered over to the local Hawker Centre Tiong Bahru market for some legit local authentic feeds.

At all of these stalls you could only pay in cash. It was such a cool vibe, it’s massive and we were the only whites, everyone else asian.

We ended up getting some iced teas with lemon for like $1 which were unreal

We got some chwee Kueh which is a radish mix with chilli sauce on top of a type of rice cake. This place is Michelin bib gourmand listed and was great!

We also got some xiao long bao which was reminiscent of din tai fung of old. We forgot to take a photo but we did get a photo of a photo of them.

Then we finally had some roast meat rice. Pretty sure it was just roast pork on some fragrant rice with a little broth soup. Always awesome.

Last stop was the Tiong Bahru bakery following a walk through the streets of Tiong Bahru. It’s such nice little neighbourhood. If you could stand the heat and wanted to live in Singapore, this would be the go.

The bakery was amazing. So many delicious looking pastries. We got an almond croissant, a Kouign Amann, raspberry and vanilla bow tie and a salted shio pan. All damn delicious.

We bussed it home for the hottest part of the day and took in the aircon and had some much needed rest. When it was dinner time we decided to catch the bus to the downtown area to have dinner at a renowned and very popular hawker Centre Lau Pa Sat.
We got Chee Cheong Fun which is a steamed rice noodle sheet with bbq pork with soy sauce on it. This is also Michelin bib gourmand recommended and was very good.

Lau pa sat is the most heavily visited hawker centre in Singapore by tourists which was a stark contrast to earlier in the day. You can tell it caters to tourism too and is mostly owned by bigger chains unlike the family owned stall in Tiong Bahru.

We decided to head home on the bus as Julian was pretty tired and we’ve had a few late nights recently. We had planned a few extra things tonight that we’ll be able to catch on a later day. It was early to bed for us.
Step count: 12,143 or 8.85km, definitely a less active day.
Costs:
Fraser Suites: $351
Busses: $19.72
Supplies: $27.16
lunch at Tiong Bahru Market: $25.50
Tiong Bahru bakery: $27.21
Lau Pa Sat: $25.46

Quite a cheap day really. The hotel was paid in advance.
Much love,
Ronnie. Aimee and Julian.
