Great Ocean Road Trip – Day 3 – Melbourne to Lorne

Hi everyone!

Our brief time in Melbourne has come to an end. We like Melbourne and have had a good time here, it’s a very nice place, but we think that Sydney is better. That debate is now settled. We started the day with the eating of pandan croissants from Agathe (delicious!) and walking down to a very nice coffee shop, grabbing some coffees and sitting along the waterside next to the stadium. It was a pretty serene few minutes.

It’s a green croissant and man is it good.

We then got in the car and drove about 45 minutes out of the way to do some board game shopping at our favourite online store Gameology.

We spent too much money here

We then began our drive to the Great Ocean road. Our first stop along the way was a very quaint town by the name of Torquay. They had a frankly excellent playground there for Julian to play on while we got some deli sandwiches for lunch.

Dang good sandwiches and a lovely pistachio biscotti

So fun
Torquay is nice

We grabbed another coffee and then made our way out of Torquay just down the road to Bells Beach which is apparently Australia’s most famous surfing beach. They hold the international Rip Curl pro surfing tournament here each year. There were a lot of surfers out there and the view is great. Julian was a bit too scared to go down the stairs to the beach as it was loud (very strong swells and big waves).

We drove another 5 minutes down the road to a town called Anglesea which for some reason has this enormous building with about 500 carparking spots and perfectly manicured gardens, just to hold a chocolate shop. Granted, it is a magnificent chocolate shop with a huge range and gorgeous looking chocolates, but it’s a bit excessive for a chocolate shop. Quite the attraction though.

Our haul! Gorgeous

We drove another 5 minutes down the road to a special location Split Point Lighthouse. Not only is it a massive lighthouse with beautiful views, but it is also the lighthouse from Round the Twist.

After that excellent little attraction we reached our destination for the night which is a cute little town called Lorne. We are staying in a weird Airbnb which is part of an old timeshare, but it’s got plenty of space and a spa bath and it’s right across the road from the beach, though it is far too cold to swim. We grabbed some fish and chips for dinner and went down to eat it at the beach and a cheeky donut for dessert. Julian loved taking his shoes off and playing in the sand.

It’s fish and chips – what did you expect?

More great ocean road goodness tomorrow as we leave Lorne for Apollo Bay.

It’s great, there’s ocean and it’s a road.

Much love,

Ronnie, Aimee and Julian
