Great Ocean Road Trip – Day 1 – Bathurst to Melbourne

Hi everyone!

We’re back for another adventure. We have had this life goal for a long time to do one international and one domestic trip every year for the rest of our lives. We did that once in 2024 when we went to NZ and QLD but hopefully we are set up well enough to achieve that every year for now on.

When we were deciding what domestic trip we would take we weighed up numerous options. We pretty quickly decided on a road trip, as having our own car is just too good to pass up. When you google best road trips in Australia, the Great Ocean Road consistently comes up as Australia’s best and most iconic road trip. It is one we have had our eye on for a long time so we decided to pull the trigger.

We decided to bite the bullet and get to Melbourne in one day. That way we can maximise time elsewhere. Though we knew it would be a huge day. We left bright and early at 6am.

It was pissing down for the first hour

We cruised straight through to Cowra which was a pretty easy leg of the drive. When we got there we went to a nice little coffee shop called Gingerbird for a couple of caps and a babycino for Julian.

Good start to the morning
They had a painting of the storefront in the store. Pretty good actually.
Needed to stop for a nice puddle jump – of course

After a quick stretch of our legs we were back in the car for the next leg which was about an hour and a half to Gundagai. We stopped at the kinda famous (not sure why) dog on the tuckerbox for morning tea.

Sneaky toastie was pretty good

Another little walk around and in the car for the next hour and a half leg from Gundagai to Wodonga. We were officially in Victoria. This marks Julian’s third Australian state visited. We stopped at a pub called The Blazing Stump hotel. It’s a pretty big, but standard pub with a basic pub menu. The highlight for sure was their kids area which is actually insane for a pub.

Full size jumping castle
Regular and average pub feeds

We were pretty full after that feed and that play. Back in the car for another roughly two hours to our next stop which was at a very nice little town in regional Victoria called Euroa. We played at the playground next to the river and went for a little walk around the river trail.

Loves a playground
Nearly got swooped by this guy
Lovely seat next to the river

We were pretty exhausted by this point. It was about 4pm and we had left at 6am so we were well and truly ready to embark on the last leg of our drive today. It was about 2 more hours to Melbourne. It went pretty quickly as Julian slept this whole leg and we listened to our audiobook. The entrance to Melbourne is so pretty with all of their decorative architecture.

Passed out heavily on this leg

We finally made it to Melbourne and checked into our hotel with is called Nesuto and is in the Docklands area literally right next to the Melbourne Star and the Yarra. We grabbed some dinner close by which was a feta and spinach gozleme and some Vietnamese noodle bowls. Which was average but did the trick.

Little poser
Right under the Melbourne star
Don’t mind a good gozleme
Pretty decent

It is absolutely going to be an early night tonight because we are proper pooped! It was a nice journey which was broken up nicely with plenty of stops. Julian was such a good boy and faced the challenge with such a good attitude.

Much Love,

Ronnie, Aimee and Julian
